App of the Day: Family Guy

23/06/2009

Picture 2I love Family Guy. I can’t get enough of it. If you’re down, stressed, frustrated or just bored, a few episodes of Family Guy and many, many laughs later, you’ll feel much better. If you’re a fan of the show like me, you’ll be pleased to know there’s now an official Family Guy app for the iPhone in the AppStore.

Disappointingly, it’s not actually a game. When I first saw the app, I expected a colorful, novelty game where you pick a character and play your way through pointless, but hilarious levels. Instead however, you have the option to watch quite a large number of clips from the show.

There are two mini games — click on the logo of Quagmire suitably entitled “Giggity” at the bottom and you have the option to play either “Peter Toss” or “Stewie Pin-Up”. Both are really quite simple and rapidly become rather boring. In the first you swipe the screen to throw Peter up in the air. In the second, you have various Stewie heads, bodies and backgrounds and you can swipe to mix and match. The games aren’t great to be honest, but for 30 seconds it’s something to do. With a screenshot, you could easily turn your custom Stewie picture in to a nice iPhone wallpaper.

Tapping on the Peter icon at the bottom will give you a rather clever video mixer. You can use this to select clips by character, and then drag them in to the timeline at the bottom to create your own “mix”. You can then upload these if you wish for others to see. You can also drag quote clippings in to the video for for funny titles. Again, it’s not the best and most creative app out there, but it’s quite fun and kills a bit of time.

By far the best thing about the app is the video clips. I’ve spent ages in the past using the YouTube app to find a decent Family Guy clip, and 9 times out of 10, when you finally do find the clip you’re after, because of copyright you end up with a still picture and the audio in the background. When you’re trying to explain to a friend who’s never seen the show how funny it is, it’s much easier to load up the official app and select a hilarious clip.

It’s not the best app out there, and at $1.99 I think it’s a tad pricey for what it is, but it will certainly put a smile on your face.
