3.0 Jailbreak a Success

20/06/2009

JailbreakI posted this morning regarding the new PwnageTool from the Dev-Team, that is compatible with the latest 3.0 firmware for iPhone and iPod Touch. As promised, I have now downloaded the software and jailbroken my iPhone and all seems well so far. If you haven’t experienced jailbreaking before, here’s a little walkthrough.

First you’ll need to go to the Dev-Team’s website and download the PwnageTool, either by torrent, or from one of the many mirrors listed there. It’s currently only available for Mac, however a Windows-friendly app has been promised for the future. Once downloaded, open the PwnageTool app and select your device.

Please remember, before doing any of this, backup your device in iTunes so that if anything does go wrong, you can at least restore your backup and nothing has been lost.

Once selected, click the next arrow. PwnageTool will now search for the iPhone 3.0 software on your Mac. If you would like to do this manually, you can do so in “expert mode”. Once the 3.0 firmware has been found, PwnageTool will modify it to include the Cydia and Icy apps and will do some other complicated things to it.

The custom build firmware package will then be saved to your desktop. PwnageTool will then tell you to switch off your device so that you can put it in to “DFU mode”. If you have a new-ish MacBook/Pro, you may have a problem at this point — for some reason, the latest machines just will not physically allow you to put your device in to DFU mode. However there is a workaround. If you connect your device via a powered USB hub, you can enter DFU mode with no problems.

Follow the steps as instructed by PwnageTool and eventually iTunes will load up and tell you that you have connected a device that must be restored.

Now click the “restore” button in iTunes whilst holding down the “alt” key. You will then be presented with a window that will allow you to select the firmware you wish to restore your device with. Obviously you want to select the custom firmware, created by PwnageTool, that has just been saved to your desktop.

iTunes will now restore you device as usual, and if it’s a success, when your device restarts you’ll have Cydia and Icy installed and you can sync all of your data back.

Now have fun modifying your device! If you come across any cool apps or have any problems, please leave a comment and let us know.
